King olly logo8/11/2023 But I also was ready to stop being afraid. I thought about how I’d felt safe hiding myself it wasn’t risky. Maybe I’d even have the guts to step into Pub Nite!Īll of this seemed like a sign. I could hide the shaved part under the top layer when necessary (on phone calls with my mother) and it would give me a much needed boost. I found myself picturing a more confident version of myself-with an undercut-at one of Olly’s concerts, comfortable in my queerness and presentation. The undercut on many of these people caught my eye - it was very on trend at that time, even Zayn had just been photographed sporting a similar haircut. I wondered what it might be like to be one of those people, a version of me that hid less within the shells of heteronormativity. He was surrounded by visibly queer audience members, covered in glitter, dancing their hearts out, celebrating themselves. Years & Years didn’t have a lot uploaded at the time, but in each video they had, especially when performing “King,” Olly looked like he was having the time of his life. Their troubled relationship is at the heart of the game, and understanding who they are is an important step in getting invested in the quest to save the Mushroom Kingdom. The song itself was extremely catchy, and every time I love a song, I look up live performances. While there is the usual and tired tradition of a captured princess to rescue, Paper Mario: The Origami King does bring a lot more to the table thanks to the two new origami characters Olivia and Olly. This inspired him to create his younger sister Olivia to help him in his efforts to take over the kingdom and enslave all the citizens by folding them into origami. Olly misunderstood the meaning of this message, and instead began to hate everything made of paper and not origami. The Craftsman added a message on him when creating him hoping he would become a good king one day. Olly was created by the Origami Craftsman to be part of the kingdom's origami festival. The story of Olly may seem simple at first, but his character and motivations to take over the Mushroom Kingdom actually go quite deep. She teases Mario about him probably wanting to know more about her before tagging along with him to escape. It is here that Mario first uses his new folding powers to rescue Olivia. She asks very strange questions and wants Mario to fold himself, too, but no matter what his response is, ends up sending him down through a trap door to the dungeon. Only Peach isn't her normal paper self, but has been folded into an origami version. After finding themselves locked in, the two split up with Mario finding Peach not much later. The pair of brothers note how eerily empty Toad Town and Peach's Castle are when they arrive, but continue on inside. This time she asks him and Luigi to join her at the Origami Festival. The SetupĪs with many Mario titles, the events of Paper Mario: The Origami King are set in motion by Mario receiving and invitation from Princess Peach. Some character spoilers will be ahead, as well as the initial setup of the game's plot. But who are these two new figures, and how do they fit into the world of the Mushroom Kingdom? That's what we're here to explore. Paper Mario: The Origami King continues that trend by taking the logical next step and introducing a new origami element to the series through two new characters: King Olly and Olivia. Everything from mechanics to visual gags play with the fact that everyone in these worlds are made of paper. The world of the Paper Marioseries has always had fun with its paper crafted aesthetic.
